If you’ve been invited to a summer wedding, you might be wondering what to wear to a wedding as a guest. These helpful tips on what to wear and what not to wear to a summer wedding will help you be the best-dressed guest.
As the summer season approaches, so does the season of love and weddings. The longer summer days, warmer temperatures and beautiful blooming flowers make summer the perfect time for a wedding.
However, deciding what to wear to a wedding as a guest can be a daunting task. As a wardrobe consultant I often give my clients recommendations on wedding guest attire. These quick tips will help you consider the dos and don’ts of summer wedding attire to help you look stylish and graceful.
Let’s start with the dos.
Things You Should Wear to a Wedding as a Guest: The Dos
1. DO Wear Light Fabrics
Summer weddings, especially those held outdoors, can be hot. Opt for light, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, or chiffon to keep you cool. A flowy maxi dress or a chic jumpsuit in these materials can be perfect clothing choices for hot summer weather.
2. DO Choose Bright Colors
Summer is the season of vibrant colors. Feel free to wear bright, cheerful colors that reflect the season. However, avoid neon shades as they can be too loud for a wedding.
3. DO Wear Floral Prints in Moderation
Floral prints are a classic choice for summer weddings. They will enhance your look and add more femininity and elegance to your attire. A floral midi dress paired with strappy sandals can be a great outfit.
However, if you plan to be in large group family photos, keep in mind that prints and patterns work better in moderation.
Floral prints and patterns can clash with the colors of other guests’ outfits in group family photos. Smaller, simple, spaced-out patterns look best next to solid colors in photos. Large patterns tend to overwhelm the subject when photographed, and small patterns can look too casual and outdated.
Avoid patterns that have too much contrast (patterns that have a dark color against a light color) and busy multi-colored patterns, because they can be very distracting in photographs.
When in doubt, remember: solids are always the safer choice.
4. DO Opt for Comfortable Shoes
Weddings often involve a lot of standing and dancing. Choose comfortable shoes to make sure your feet don’t ache by the end of the night.
Now, let’s move on to the don’ts:
Things You Should Wear to a Wedding as a Guest: The Don’ts
1. DON’T Wear White
This is a universal rule for all weddings. White is reserved for the bride. It’s her day to shine, so avoid any dress in shades of white, cream, or ivory.
2. DON’T Overdress or Underdress
It’s important to consider the venue and time of the wedding. A beach wedding calls for a more casual dress, while a church wedding requires a more formal attire.
3. DON’T Wear Revealing Clothes
While it’s okay to show a little skin, remember that a wedding is a formal event. Avoid overly revealing outfits that might be inappropriate.
4. DON’T Forget a Light Jacket or Shawl
Even though it’s summer, evenings can get chilly. A light jacket or shawl can be a stylish and practical addition to your outfit.
The Key to Being the Best-dressed Guest
Remember, the key to being the best-dressed guest is to balance style and comfort. Choose an outfit that reflects your personal style, is appropriate for the occasion, and allows you to enjoy the celebration comfortably. Happy wedding season!
